I based my upgrade on this install which was done on an F30 3 series by a chap in the US who is a pro installer. The Hifi option (SA676) gives you balanced, unprocessed line outputs to the amplifier as well 2 8" woofers under the seats - a decent starting point. There is also only one 6" woofer enclosure under a seat, so adding woofers needs major work.

The signal from the head unit is EQed, so you need to either code the head unit or use a processor to solve this. However upgrading from the base audio system is also tricky. Upgrading the HK system isn't easy - you need to tap into the MOST digital bus, and you're essentially throwing away all of the bits you've paid for in the package. This turns out to have been a very good decision. By most accounts the HK system in the F20 is inferior to the one in the F31, so when ordering the car I decided to go for the intermediate Hifi upgrade and not bother with HK, with a view to an aftermarket upgrade later if needed. I had an F31 with the Harman Kardon system prior to the F20, and although it was decent I was never really that impressed. I'm a bit of an audiophile and enjoy a pretty wide range of music. A bit of background: I'm not a basshead or interested in massive SPL levels, my focus was mainly on sound quality. It's still a work in progress but I'll post updates as I go along. You either have to buy replacement trim which is expensive, stick them to the current trim which is a bit too ghetto or drill and fit them properly, neater looking but not easy to return to stock without buying trim again.I'm in the process of upgrading the audio system in my M140i and thought I'd share my experiences. The only problem area is the tweeters as there are no holes in the trim. Shouldn’t cost more than £600ish all in and all pretty much reversible to stock with a few hours work. I’ll also add tweeters for a better sound stage.įailing that, I’ll change the speakers throughout as well as subs. Not expecting miracles but hopefully some amplification will help. I’m going to upgrade the system slightly.

However, it’s not great either when I know how much better a HK would be and there is much room for improvement. It’s now awful, far better than previous gen F series cars where bass was non existent.

So I had a listen to the base sound system. Is this still the case or is the system bearable and I'll be able to get away with simply a better speaker for cripser music and a little more punch from the subs? Older cars simply could not produce any bass with the base 6 speaker system and it would sound like utter sh*te. However, how bad is the base 6 speaker setup? Ideally, it needs an AMP by which point i'd go down the HK route. Of course, I could get it retrofitted, around £600 for all parts and another £500 for install and coding, but I have found this:

Ordinarily I always spec a car in with the M Sport Plus pack, but with the current microchip shortage, a £2k premium for bigger brakes, m sport seatbelts, tinted windows (which i'll get done aftermarket) and £300 worth of black kidney grill and spoiler simply wasn't justifiable without the HK Sound System Alpine White, 18's, M Sport, Parking Assistant and a Pan roof. We managed to get all the necessary spec onto the car. It will be remapped (circa 180bhp and 300nm more than enough for everyday stuff) It's a second car - we have an G05 X5 30d for everyday stuff So I've just ordered my wife a F44 218i as she's returning to the office in August/September for a few days a week, the car intends to make her commute easier as she is currently pregnant with our first child and so that she has a car to get around whilst I'm at work.īefore everyone starts slating the engine choice: Also posted on another forum but zero response so hoping more luck here
